Campus Signage Project
This project was a rather enjoyable experience. Doing the presentation through a storytelling perspective was rather refreshing from other speeches/presentations I've done in the past. It was all very natural just explaining your journey through the project. From where you found it, why you chose it still, and all your ideas that went into improving a sign. It also made me realize how powerful storytelling actually can be. I feel like storytelling can captivate people and really catch their attention unlike other formats. The sign I found was behind Holmes and it was suppose to be advertising the study abroad fair. I applied some design elements and basic logic to make the sign look nicer and easier to look at. Originally, my sign was kinda hard to look at. It was very cluttered and some basic stuff like the date, time, and destination of the event wasn't even on the main sign but taped to the sign. There was nothing eye catching to the sign which is kind of a problem if it's main purpose is to tell people, "Hey, I'm here and a thing you should come to." I ended up deleting a lot of the sign in photoshop to clear up some space. I realized the sign was odd because in western culture people read left to right and often look at the top left corner for this reason. Knowing that I moved the title of the event to the top left corner of the sign so people could glance at the sign and know what the sign was about. Then I placed the time, date, destination of the event in the top right corner figuring the two most important pieces of information the sign should have is the title of the event, when, and where the event would take place. Therefore, they should be seen first. After that I wanted to add some nice colorful pictures of famous buildings around the world to give that sense of inspiration and exploration. Removing the black and white outlines of famous buildings that made too much clutter for what they were. Finally I moved the other information about the event in the bottom left corner. I did this because if a person bothered analyzing the sign and were interested in the event then they could get more information from the sign than others that just glance and aren't interested. The end result I believe is a better sign because it looks better and creates some white space making it more appealing to look at. I think it does a better job for it's intended purpose than the original sign. The photo below is the before and after picture of the sign I did.
